Salt Spring Theatre Alive Society
Founding directors, Yvonne Adalian and Diana Hayes created Salt Spring Theatre Alive Society in 1984 to bring innovative theatre and literary productions to the stage, drawing on as much local island talent as possible. Some of their sold-out productions included Canadian playwright Joan McLeod’s "Toronto Mississippi" and "Jewel", Lee Blessing’s "Eleemosynary", David W. Rintels’ "Clarence Darrow", and Willy Russell’s "Shirley Valentine". Their collaborative multi-media show, "Islomania, Saga of the Settlers", featured vignettes from Salt Spring Island’s dramatic and musical history and was produced in conjunction with the Salt Spring Festival of the Arts for three summer seasons.
Theatre Alive has also been the host for many literary events on Salt Spring Island. The Society receives annual funding from The Canada Council, The Writers’ Union of Canada, The League of Canadian Poets and the Salt Spring Celebration of Canadian Writers. Diana Hayes was joined by directors Brian Brett and Sharon Doobenen to promote great Canadian authors through their Literary Evenings series. Together they produced the infamous Salt Spring Erotic Festival in 1995, followed by three more packed out annual erotic fund-raising events. New and famous writers from across the country are featured throughout the year and other collaborative and fundraising events are planned to keep the programme alive and well and reading on Salt Spring Island.
